Morskie Oko from Krakow

Morskie Oko from Kraków: an 8 km walk each way from Palenica Białczańska (2.5 hours, Tatra National Park), park entry 11 złoty, winter access, and the day trips that go there.

Updated November 2026

Morskie Oko, the largest lake in the Tatras at 1,395 metres, is a separate day from the Zakopane and thermal baths tour: from the Palenica Białczańska car park it is an asphalt road of about 8 km each way on foot, which the Tatra National Park reckons at 2.5 hours each way, and it asks you to plan at least seven hours for the trip. From Kraków that makes a 12-hour day. KRK-KrakowTours’ From Krakow: Morskie Oko Lake, Skywalk and Zakopane drives you there and on to Zakopane, from €91 a person (checked November 2026).

The calendar above is that day, with 38 reviews (checked November 2026). It is transport with an English-speaking driver-guide, about two hours each way to the walk and back, an hour at the lake, a stop by the treetop walkway at Poronin (entry not included), two hours in Zakopane and a stop in Chochołów on the way home; the park entry, food and any cart ride are paid on the spot.

Why it is not on the Zakopane tour

The Zakopane day tours fill their 11 hours with Chochołów, Krupówki, the Gubałówka funicular and three hours in the thermal pools. Morskie Oko alone needs about five hours on foot there and back plus time at the lake, and the car park is about 22 km by road from the centre of Zakopane. You can have the lake or the baths in one day from Kraków, not both.

The walk

The road starts at Palenica Białczańska, at 990 metres, and climbs gently on asphalt to Włosienica and the lake, where the PTTK mountain hut stands on the shore. The Tatra National Park describes it as an approach of about 8 km and plans 2.5 hours each way plus about two hours of rest at the hut; a route planner gives 8.7 km from the car park to the hut. The lake itself, 860 by 560 metres and 34.5 hectares, takes about an hour and 2.5 km to walk round when there is no snow.

The park’s rules and fees

  • Entry. A Tatra National Park ticket costs 11 złoty (5.50 reduced; a 7-day ticket 55 złoty); children under 7 go free.
  • Parking. Cars may only enter the Palenica Białczańska and Łysa Polana car parks with an e-ticket bought online, from 36 to 75 złoty depending on demand; coaches over 8 metres cannot park there.
  • Horse carts. Since 1 September 2026 the park’s horse-drawn carts go only from Palenica Białczańska to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, about 2.9 km, instead of most of the way to the lake. They do not run on 1 November, Easter Sunday, Corpus Christi or 25 December.
  • E-buses. The park’s electric buses to Włosienica (89 złoty from Zakopane, 69 from Palenica, park entry included) ran to a timetable valid until 6 November 2026, and the park says they are suspended in winter.
  • Other rules. No dogs, not even in a rucksack, and no drones. From 1 March to 30 November walking on the trails is banned between dusk and dawn.

In winter

From November the Tatras are under snow, and the park declares avalanche danger, with the mountain rescue service’s bulletin at lawiny.topr.pl. The road to Morskie Oko is a road, not a mountain trail, but it carries snow and ice, and the park warns that its e-buses are suspended and that rides can be cut for snow. We found no statement from the park that the road closes in winter; read its tourist communique on tpn.pl the day before you go, wear proper boots and be off the road before dark. If the walk is not for you in winter, the Zakopane and thermal baths day keeps you in town and in the warm.
